Ubuntu-n00b: Day 2

So installation of Ubuntu 9.10 in dual-boot with Windows went fine, but I did encounter some problems on my first workday. For good solutions, feel free to comment.

  • We're using Exchange 2007 for email, contacts and calendars, and I think I have tried every combination of servers and domains available in Evolution with no luck. I'm sure there is a solution, but it is certainly not easily found. This could be what makes me drop Ubuntu alltogether if there is no solution.
  • Dual screens posed quite a problem, and it's still not solved completely. I use a 24" Dell via HDMI and a 17" IBM via VGA from my laptop, and after some fiddling, I managed to get them to work. However, I can't shut the lid on the laptop without all screens going blank.
(Update: This seems to be an issue with the upgrade to 9.10: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/416236. I assume it will be fixed pretty soon.)

On a positive note, installing a Dell 3115cn printer via WLAN was completed without a hitch, and OpenOffice seem to to the job so far.

More to come, have a great weekend!

Hey. To prevent the screen from blanking when laptop lid is closed, you should go to System, Preferences, Power management and select action for when laptop lid is closed. Note that there are one setting for "On AC" and one for "On battery".

For exchange server, if the exchange protocol will not work, you could try the IMAPI protocol. Good luck :)

Hi there,

Have you tried simply typing in the name of the server? For example, "ldnexchange01".

Also, I don't have Evolution right in front of me, but make sure you've told it the type of server you're trying to connect to. Maybe it's configured to use POP3 or IMAP instead of Exchange?

I'm not trying to assume you don't know what you're talking about, just exploring all available options.

Hey guys,

For the lid issue, I don't have a "do nothing" option under power management in 9.10. I seem to remember I had that option in 9.04, so could that be a bug? I'm also running 9.10 UNR on a Dell Inspiron Mini 10v with the same issue, and it's slightly annoying.

I still haven't had any luck hooking up to my Exchange server through Evolution, and I'm starting to wonder if it can be my ISP/host, which isn't all up to speed on a lot of other issues as well. I managed to receive mail through the IMAP setting, but that requires a SMTP server to send, which I don't have, so at least I'm halfway there...

Thanks for your suggestions... :)
